Little Women – the Little Musical

Little Women, the musical

Little Women, a musical based on the beloved classic novel by Louisa May Alcott will play at Faith United Methodist Church, Bellefonte, under the direction of Drew M. Baker with musical direction by Jane Pilch and Linda Hoffman, choreography by Marissa Weaver.
With book, music and lyrics by Jay Richards, “Little Women,” the little musical, follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. Jo longs to publish a novel; Meg longs for a fiancé; Beth longs for a piano; Amy longs to be admired. This timeless tale has been given new life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious song, dance, and a few tears. It celebrates personal discovery and coming of age in a time of challenge and transformation. This is a must- see heartwarming holiday season starter. Experience the joy, triumph and tragedy felt by the March family.
ALIVE’s Artistic Director Drew M. Baker said, “After presenting this show four years ago, we decided last year to bring it back. Following the 2012 performances we were invited to bring the production to Faith Church this December. It thrills me to be able to bring this lovely musical adaptation of this literary classic to our audiences. It’s so full and rich with Louisa May Alcott’s tremendous writings that bring life to this new musical.   Come hear the story of the March girls and their family journey through travail and triumph. It is a perfect start for the holiday season!”

The technical elements are brought together beautifully by delightful and elegant costuming, authentic wigs and hair that reflect Civil War America and scenery, to transport the audience back into 1863.

Louisa May Alcott was a prolific writer of more than two hundred stories, sketches, poems, and serials. According to the New York Public Library, Little Women was first published in two volumes (1868 and 1869). It was later published in one combined novel in 1880 and has never been out of print. Alcott followed up the popular story with two sequels, Little Men (1871) and Jo’s Boys (1886). Little Women has been adapted numerous times for TV, film, and the stage and an operatic version was recorded in 2000.

All tickets are $6.00 and are available from cast and choir members, at the church office, and the church Connection Table.
